Ok, so this is one of my favorite history books. I just recently did a history project on the Culper Spy Ring and this book was a huge help in my research. I first got into the Culper Spy Ring because of AMC’s show TURN: Washington’s Spies, and there’s very little books written on the Culper Spy Ring so this book was obviously one of the first books that I turned to.
First I want to mention that Brian Kilmeade and Don Yaeger wrote this book in a wonderful way. The way they wrote it, I was swept up in what was happening. Even though I knew that America obviously won the America Revolution, when reading the book I was on the edge of my seat wondering if the Culper Ring was going to get the information to Washington in time. And that was just an amazing feeling for me because some history books really drag but this book really kept my attention and helped me to feel like I was actually absorbing the information that they were giving instead of the usual in one ear and out the other. It’s very detail-oriented and it gives a lot of information at once but it’s easy to process because it’s written in such a way that you don’t get confused by what’s happening but you actually understand what they’re saying. I’ve had trouble with some history books in the past where I really struggled to understand and picture what the author was saying but I didn’t have that problem with this book. I was able to keep up and able to learn a lot more about the Culper Ring because of it.
This being one of the few books written on the Culper Ring, is a great read. If you’re even just slightly interested in history I would recommend this book. It tells the story of the Culper Spy Ring, a group of six figures in American history who aren’t very well-known (being spies and all) and it does a great job of covering all of the members of the ring and also producing information on Agent 355, one of the unknown members of the Ring. They go through the history of how the Ring was formed and what they did during their years of operation and it also talks about how the Ring ended and what happened to each of the members after and how all of their identities were uncovered. I would also recommend watching AMC’s TURN: Washington’s Spies and reading Washington’s Spies by Alexander Rose.
I would like to apologize for any lack of specifications in the book or anything that I’ve gotten wrong. I’m a high school student so my knowledge on history is to some extent.
