Love is a Dog From Hell is a collection of poetry from the 1970s. Bukowski shows a dark side to romance in his poems, he explores broken relationships, alcohol, broken hearts, prostitution, and sex. I heard about this book from the friend that also recommended Norwegian Wood to me. She had read it and mentioned how much she loved it and wanted someone to read it so she could talk about it.
The book is sort of intense. There’s definitely a lot in the book and you’ve got to go a bit slow to unpack it all. I liked a lot of the poems, though there were still some that confused me. But honestly, talking about the book with another person honestly helped a lot and helped me to appreciate Bukowski’s work a lot more. This collection made me want to read his other works just to see how that stack up and compare to this one, so you may see another review of a Bukowski book in the future.
I would recommend this book if you are interested in the topics that I mentioned above. I understand how some people not like the poetry in it, but I think that even if you’re hesitant to read it, I think you should definitely read it. Feel free to comment or email us if you’d like to talk about it!
Happy Reading!
