Love is a Mixtape by Rob Sheffield is a biography and memoir that tells the story of music and the impacts on one's life. Each chapter is started with a mixtape that he either made or received. He goes throughout the chapter and tells of what that mixtape meant to him and the time he had it and what it still means to him. Sheffield writes about understanding loss and he includes the role music includes in this and how it can help give us even the tiniest bit of understanding. He mainly tells the story of his wife, Renee and her passing. He talks about her love of music and how it connected them when they didn’t share much in common. While commending his wife, Sheffield also mourns the 90s and the music of that time. He mourns how music has lost its authentic purpose that it had in the past and how it’s become more synthesized. Despite handling the heavy topic of loss, Sheffield’s humor helps make this a light-hearted book.
This book is definitely a must-read. It’s one of those books where as soon as I picked it up, I just got sucked in and didn’t want to stop reading. Sheffield’s style is also one of my favorite things about this book. His writing is engaging and direct and it has a way of just making you want to not put the book down. His writing is very compelling and it’s a very quick read. It took me less than a day to read it but it did help that I didn’t really put it down.
Happy Reading!
