Norwegian Wood is a story told by Toru Watanabe as he’s looking back on his college days in Tokyo. It shows his devotion to Naoko and their friendship that goes back to high school but has been marred by the death of one of their friends. Watanabe tells of his isolation in college and how Naoko has retreated into her own shell, Watanabe starts to interact more with others and ends up meeting a headstrong and independent woman. I heard about Norwegian Wood from a friend of mine. She had just finished reading it and she recommended it to me because she had loved it and she thought it would be something I would enjoy.
My friend ended up being right. I thought the book was great and I loved how it made me think and how it made me look at things differently. When I finished reading the book, I ended up facetiming my friend and we ended up talking about the book for about an hour and how we felt about it and what we thought. If I’m being honest, it was a great book, but I was a little confused on how it ended (I’m not going to mention how it ends because spoilers!) But after talking with someone else about it and what we thought it meant it helped me understand the book more.
Yes, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone. It’s kind of similar to Love is a Mixtape, which is what I reviewed last week, where they both tell the story of loss and how people deal with it. It’s definitely an interesting read and though I personally thought it moved a bit slow at some points, the story is an amazing one that I think anyone would be interested in.
I’m always happy to talk with anyone about any books!! Feel free to message us on any social media platform, leave a comment, or email us! Happy Reading!
