Maddy’s Collection

After celebrating the independence of our country this past week, I was reminded of why I love history and why I find it so important. While trying to find something to post, I thought that nothing would be better than my collection of old books. I started collecting them accidentally at first, simply finding books I thought were cool due to their age, but it has since grown into something that I look for. I have books ranging from 1850-1950 that I’m considering old, but I love the idea that some of these books were held by civil war soldiers and men and women fighting for their rights. I love thinking about where they could have been sitting when they were first published and bought, and what student had to spend their time reading for class. My first addition to the collection (and my oldest book) was a book I bought from the Strand Bookstore in New York. They have a whole floor dedicated to old books, I felt like I needed special access to be there. The book I bought is from 1856 and called The Modern Storyteller. Part of me definitely bought it for the irony. Since then, I’ve found books in thrift stores, my garage, and older bookstores to add to my collection. The amount of old books I’ve found from second hand stores is surprising.
